The Merrimack river is New England's second longest river. Its valley, among the first settled in the state, is home to Nashua, Manchester and Concord, New Hampshire's three largest cities. The area has developed like many northeast communities. Starting as agricultural, it became linked by water, rail and stagecoach transportation. Later the harnessing of water power spurred industrial development. Along the Merrimack's banks are found reminders of past industrial strength: old railroad beds and revitalized mill buildings, as well as fertile farm lands.Historical information is abundant and available to the public. Tours include the New Hampshire State House (the oldest state house still in use), Canterbury Shaker Village, Amoskeag Mill Yard, and even a home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. A new attraction is the recently opened New Hampshire Historical Museum in Concord. If present-day events are more to your liking, there is world class auto and horse racing. The area has all the conveniences of settlement including elegant dining and accomodations without losing its rural feel.
