Contoocook Covered Bridge Tour

(Top-Down-Tour #1)

If you're like me you enjoy driving around, finding the good back roads. This is a simple tour I put together that manages to use up most of a day, if you stop along the way for some good food and interesting sights. (If you're cruising with your wife, be sure to take in at least one antique shop or yard sale).

New Hampshire has over 60 covered bridges, on this trip you we will visit six of them, three on the Contoocook river and three on the Warner river. While I have laid the excursion out in a sequence, it is not important where you start as the route is a 36 mile loop.

Start in the small town of Contoocook, exit 6 off of 89. Get off of the highway and head into town. The center of town is standard New England: big old white houses, one intersection and a quickie-mart. Now's a good time to stop at Rosies' for that muffin and cup of coffee you have wanted since Boston.

Ok, for the trip we are going to head up Rt. 103 to Warner, into Bradford. In Bradford we'll take 114 south past Lake Massasecum and into Henniker. Then it's east on 202&9 to the Hopkinton dam, and back into Contoocook on 127. This map shows area.

Do you still need more of a stretch before driving? Well good news, the first bridge is just across the street.
