1). The Yellow House

front of house

To the right is a yellow-painted house of the mid 1800's, revealing in its gables some Shingle-Style detailing and also providing a excellent illustration of the Victorian love of the porch or piazza. This house has a floor plan derived from that of the earlier Greek Revival house (compare the Pierce Manse at the end or North Main Street). With its entrance door and stair hall set at one side of the front, this vernacular house type has recently been nicknamed the "Homestead House". It can assume many decorative styles, as seen elsewhere on the tour.
